Only lizards live

in these desert-wide horizons,

dust-windy and empty

 

until the houses invade.

 

Narrow minded suburbanites,

well-fed and lonely,

despite the gossip

 

and sprinkler fed lawns

 

their lives drain

become cacti gardens

prickly sharp

 

with fear of lizards.
